Before-School Mandarin Class at Clarendon 课 前 普 通 话 班 The three-day-a-week before-school Mandarin program at Clarendon offers a warm and engaging learning experience. Students are grouped into three classes based on their grade level and language proficiency. Placement is flexible, and adjustments can be made if a different level is more suitable for your child. Our teachers guide students through learning using Chinese art, songs, games, stories, and other age-appropriate activities. Students learn Mandarin in a natural and immersive way—just as they learn English—by living the language. Classes are conducted entirely in Mandarin, creating a fully immersive environment. Through meaningful content and engaging experiences, children will develop fluency and foster a lifelong love of learning Mandarin.
Student Grouping & Class Levels To better support our students’ growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, we group learners based on age, grade, Mandarin proficiency, and assessment results. We divide students into three levels:
Student Grouping & Class LevelsTo support each child’s growth in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, students are grouped based on age, grade level, Mandarin proficiency, and placement assessments. We offer three levels: Beginning (TK–2nd Grade) For students who are new to Mandarin, have limited exposure, or can speak Mandarin but are not yet reading or writing Chinese characters. Intermediate (2nd–4th Grade or 2+ years of Mandarin learning with us) For students with some Mandarin experience or heritage learners who understand spoken Mandarin and are developing reading and writing skills. Focus: Expanding vocabulary, practicing conversations, and building sentence writing skills. Intermediate/Advanced (4th–5th Grade or 4+ years of Mandarin learning with us) For students who can hold fluent Mandarin conversations, read stories without pinyin, and write short paragraphs. Focus: Strengthening fluency, comprehension, and writing through discussions, storytelling, and structured writing practice.
