Mei Jia Chinese Learning Center is a multi-faceted Mandarin language and Chinese cultural learning center. We offer before and after school Mandarin programs, summer camp, and weekend programs for K-8th graders at different ages and levels. We maintain a very low teacher-to-student ratio so that each student will have individualized instruction. Many students in our program have passed the AP Chinese Exam, continued Mandarin as a language subject in college, and won many awards in Chinese calligraphy and poetry contests, such as the Chinese Bridge Cup Recital and Calligraphy Contests, and CLTAC (Chinese Language Teachers Association of California) Mandarin Speech Contests, etc

Mandarin Program at St. Gabriel
Language is best acquired through meaningful social interaction and engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Our program provides an immersive Mandarin language environment where students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through structured instruction and interactive activities. Highly trained and caring instructors deliver age-appropriate academic Mandarin lessons combined with culturally rich enrichment activities. Students will engage in Chinese language learning through songs, poems, chants, storytelling, and guided conversation practice. In addition, students will participate in Chinese cultural and history-based activities such as calligraphy, arts and crafts, seasonal celebrations, and cultural exploration projects. These activities are designed to reinforce vocabulary acquisition, language comprehension, and cultural understanding in a fun and supportive environment. The program aims to build both Mandarin literacy and cultural appreciation through consistent exposure, interactive learning, and active participation.
At St. Gabriel, we group students by both age and Mandarin language proficiency to ensure each child is placed in the most supportive and engaging learning environment. During the first week of class, we will take time to get to know your child and observe them in the classroom. If we feel a different class level may be a better fit, we will always talk with you first to make sure your child feels comfortable, confident, and happy in their placement. 🌿 Which Class Is Right for My Child? Beginning Class This class is designed for students with little or no prior exposure to Mandarin. Instruction is gentle and encouraging, with approximately 80% Mandarin and 20% English used to help students build confidence and understanding. Students will learn conversational Mandarin along with basic reading and writing in a fun and supportive way. Intermediate Class This class is designed for students in 2nd grade and above who can already understand and participate in basic conversational Mandarin, with some exposure to reading and writing. The teacher uses mostly Mandarin during class, helping students grow their confidence in listening and speaking naturally. Students typically have Mandarin exposure at home or have participated in a Mandarin immersion program for at least two years. Advanced Class This class is designed for students in 4th grade and above who have strong Mandarin listening and speaking skills and are able to read and write Chinese characters. Students continue building their literacy skills through reading, writing, discussions, and fun project-based learning, all primarily in Mandarin. 📅 Program Schedule Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
